An Elihu Thomson apparatus, also known as a ring launcher or jumping ring apparatus.
Material required: An aluminum ring, iron rod in the electromagnet, Power Supply, copper wire for coil etc.
Description:: An aluminum ring is placed loosely around the iron rod in the electromagnet. When the Power Supply is switched on, the ring jumps up.One can also adjusted the voltage on the variac to make the ring levitate.
The changing magnetic field in the coil due to the change in current in the coil induces a current in the metal ring. Lenz's Law states that the magnetic field of the ring opposes the magnetic field of the coil and forces the the ring to fly away.
Improved Jumping ring by replacing iron rod with number of steel wire.

Note: A broken ring cannot set up eddy currents and will not jump.
