A standing wave also called stationary wave is a wave that remains in a constant position.

Material required: Mechanical Vibrator, string, Small weight, pulley, etc
Description: A heavy string is attached at one end to the vibrating mechanism, whereas the other end passes over a pulley and has a weight attached to provide tension in the string. By adjusting the frequency or adjusting the tension in the string, a variety of standing wave patterns are generated. These standing wave modes arise from the combination of reflection and interference. All standing wave patterns have nodes and antinodes. The antinodes result from the constructive interference (maximum displacement) of the two waves while Nodes result from the destructive interference (no displacement) of the two waves.

One can also create standing wave on circular ring.

Note: Length of the string is multiple of half the wavelength. In case of ring circumference of ring equal to odd number of half wavelengths.
